google engineers propose new power supply standard for homes

Engineers at Google, tired of running tens of thousands of computers with inefficient power supplies, has proposed a new standard for “high efficiency power supplies for home computers and servers” based on everything running on 12 volts only. They say that it would save 40 billion kwh over three years, worth $5 Billion. (Via Treehugger.com)

These systems would be no good for high energy use systems such as toasters, but would be fine for lighting and small consumer domestic appliances. It would also make it easier for people to use wind/solar generators to offset their external electricity dependence. I would love a system like this in my home, where my kids leave lights, PC’s and otther such devices on all night costing me a fortune and wasting resources.
