king street

king streetOriginally uploaded by bus_stopper.

Part of an illustration of King Street I am doing for a future book, a collaboration with a local historian about Bristol Streets. We will take several streets in central Bristol, I’ll do the illustrations and she will write about the history and development of that street. Its going to take a while to do all the pictures…

I am working in pen and ink, on quite rough watercolour paper. I want the line to be quite sketchy, although having only just started this project its going to take me a while to get my “eye” in and get the feel of it right. That’s going to develop as I progress with the drawings. We want a “quality” feel to the book, and I want the viewer to be drawn into the picture, to imagine themself walking down that street as if they are there. Again, that’s going to take some time to get right.

dark clowns are stalking me…part 1

I am being stalked by dark clowns. They say that I have pictures of them that they need for publicity pictures. I am trying to keep my nose clean.

solvent transfers

Doing a solvent transfer is probably the quickest, easiest way to get an image onto a T-Shirt, Moleskine, or other surface. Like screen printing, the image is applied directly the surface. Unlike screen printing, this can be done quickly, cheaply, and without an extra equipment.

This is a fantastic method of creating images that I am going to try in the near future (this week hopefully). You start with a photocopy (or many photocopied images) the copy is laid over the surface face down, and a solvent such as xylene or lacquer thinner is applied to the back. You then rub the surface to reveal a mirrored image. For smaller images a blender pen can be used (get it from an art shop) but a rag moistened in solvent works better for larger areas.

biro art

Biro Art – Lemon Party – Biro Doodles with a ball point pen by NobbyNobody

This guy does great work just using a biro and his handy scanner. It just goes to show that you dont need much to create art, just a pen and some paper and you’re away. I want to get back to some more basic stuff, working with pen and ink has always been my favourite method. Seeing this has given me the impetus to get going again.

I was showing his picture here but he blocked it so I have updated this post to reflect this. Some people dont like publicity.
