arts trail a success

Southbank Bristol Arts

Well its been over a week since it ended, but this year’s Southbank Bristol Arts Trail was a success. It was a fantastic week that started with the Arts Trail weekend, then followed on with the performance week. Despite the rain, the numbers were only slightly down on last year, with 4000 people coming through the doors of the Southville Cnetre. The performance events that followed were well supported. That was good, although I missed a couple of the events. The main thing was that there was something on to do or see every night, and whilst they weren’t football stadium style events they were good value entertainment. The arts trail goes from strength to strength and gets better each year. and is now the largest arts trail in Bristol.

Here are some pictures from this year’s event.

It proves what you can achieve in a community with a bit of work.

blogs and wikis and sharepoint oh my!

I work with SharePoint, and have recently been moving to SharePoint 2007. Our users have been very patient, even excited, by the move to SharePoint 2007. The reason? It allows them to do all kinds of things that they haven’t been allowed to do in the past, like share stuff, and organize people, and just well, generally communicate better between teams and departments. In that respect SharePoint has been a bit of a disruptive technology at UWE. I use the word disruptive in a nice, web 2.0 way, not in a naughty schoolboy kind of way. So SharePoint has really empowered people to be able to do stuff they just couldn’t easily before without the help of IT or other technical support. The move to SharePoint 2007 has additionally held the promise of blogs and wikis. Now these users are DESPERATE to get their hands on such things. They use blogs at home. Some have used wikis at other organizations. They clearly see the benefits, even if in IT Services that benefit is dismissed rather lightly (I work in IT Services at UWE by the way, so I am qualified to speak). Some people in the IT Services department haven’t even HEARD of wikis. And if they have, they haven’t used one or are suspicious of it because they will have NO CONTROL over what goes into it. Scary for them. But nonetheless the user’s want it. And SharePoint has it just about everywhere.

a fair(y) use tale

This video uses probably the most copyrighted stuff on the planet, Disney film cartoons, as the basis for an essay on fair use and copyright issues. Its a bit heavy going in the middle, but still well done. It’s interesting to note that as each early Disney film’s copyright comes near to expiring, their lawyers go to court and get copyright extended. Thats not just for that film, but for everything else as well.

king street

king street

king streetOriginally uploaded by bus_stopper.

Part of an illustration of King Street I am doing for a future book, a collaboration with a local historian about Bristol Streets. We will take several streets in central Bristol, I’ll do the illustrations and she will write about the history and development of that street. Its going to take a while to do all the pictures…

I am working in pen and ink, on quite rough watercolour paper. I want the line to be quite sketchy, although having only just started this project its going to take me a while to get my “eye” in and get the feel of it right. That’s going to develop as I progress with the drawings. We want a “quality” feel to the book, and I want the viewer to be drawn into the picture, to imagine themself walking down that street as if they are there. Again, that’s going to take some time to get right.

may need to move here permanently

Becuase of the continuing cost of upkeep on the peterhaus.co.uk domain and the website hosting, I may at some point in the near future have to move the site to here. That will mean I would have to move the old posts here too. I dont know how to go about doing that so will have to do some investigations, but it must be possible to export the posts from a WordPress site and move it to a WordPress.com blog fairly simply? If anyone reads this and knows how to do it then please let me know!

may have to move sites?

Because of the continuing cost of upkeep on this domain and the website hosting, I may at some point in the near future have to move the content to a free hosting service. To make this possible I have taken a free site at http://peterhaus.wordpress.com and may have to move the content there at some point soon. I dont know how to go about doing that so will have to do some investigations, but it must be possible to export the posts from here and move it to a WordPress.com blog fairly simply? If anyone reads this and knows how to do it then please let me know!
